– Notice what Jesus says here, in order to live rightly in the current time, Jesus had to be baptized. The word righteousness means right or correct living. So in order to live correctly according to the Fathers will, Jesus had to be baptized. If God felt the need to baptized, how much more then shall those who are considering Christianity need to be baptized? Notice God the Fathers response to Jesus baptism: 17.) And lo a voice from Heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased., Matthew 3:17. The Father was well pleased with the actions of Jesus. It is our goal to please the Father and Son in our lives so let all who desire to be Christians be baptized.
– Jesus taught John the Baptist a very important lesson in His baptism. This lesson is that we need to put the needs of others before our own needs. We will re-read the context so as to gain some clarity: 14.) But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15.) And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered Him., Matthew 3:14-15. John desired the forgiveness of sins, but at this time, Jesus said we must put aside our will, and do the will of God the Father, and John learned the lesson and baptized Jesus. We must always put others before ourselves, and ultimately put God first in our lives. 3.) Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4.) Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others., Philippians 2:3-4. So we see from these passages the very thing that Jesus taught John the Baptist, to look on the things of others before our own things. Of course it was the Fathers will that Jesus be baptized, so in essence the will of God the Father came first. May Gods will always be done, Amen!
5.) Jesus shows us that as Christians we are to use the sword of the Spirit during temptation and thus by example shows us that we must always wear the whole armor of God.
– After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, the Gospel account of Mark says that immediately the Spirit takes Jesus into the wilderness and there the devil tempts Him: 12.) And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness. 13.) And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him., Mark 1:12-13. The first thing we learn from Jesus is that after one is baptized, the devil immediately attacks the one baptized, the devil always attacks Christians, lets read the scriptures on this matter. 8.) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9.) Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world., I Peter 5:8-9. Notice that Peter says the same thing happens to members of the church (brethren) throughout the world. The devil tempts all those who are saved, he is not going to waste his time with those who are on their way to torment, because he already has those souls. He is going to come after us, Christians. We must also note that Peter says the devil is walking about, seeking whom he may devour, and hat the devil goes all over the earth seeking those whom he may devour. The book of Job affirms this very truth, lets go to the book of Job for a moment. 6.) Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. 7.) And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8.) And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God, and eschewed evil?, Job 1:6-8. Satan tells God that he has returned from walking around the Earth. God being omniscient already knew why Satan was walking around the earth, it was because he was looking for someone to tempt. Then notice Gods description of Job, 8.) And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that feareth God, and eschewed evil?, Job 1:8. We see once again, that the devil is more interested in attacking a person who is faithful to God, rather than tempting one who is already lost in sin. From this it would be safe to assume the devil loves a challenge. And Jesus, the ultimate role model would have been a far greater challenge than Job was. Jesus temptation was immediate, as would be the temptation of one who just became a Christian, because they were snatched from the fires of Hell. Lets look now at Matthew chapter 4, to get a detailed look at how Satan had tempted Jesus. 1.) Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2.) And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward an hungred. 3.) And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4.) But He answered and said, It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. 5.) Then the devil taketh Him up into the holy city, and setteth Him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6.) And saith unto Him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give His angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7.) Jesus said unto him, it is written again, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8.) Again, the devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9.) And saith unto Him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10.) Then saith Jesus unto him, get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve. 11.) Then devil leaveth Him, and behold, angels came and ministered unto Him., Matthew 4:1-11. The first temptation of Jesus was hunger, Jesus had fasted forty days and nights, according to verse 2. Fasting was done in order to increase ones focus on God, and to remove ones mind from the things of the world. Indeed it was a good way to prepare for the temptations of the devil, for Jesus was thinking about His Heavenly Father and the holy scriptures during this time of fasting. The devil tried to take these circumstances and use them for evil, because he wanted to remove Jesus focus from God and put it back on food.
Jesus however answers the devils temptation with scripture, saying that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. So Jesus, carrying the sword of the Spirit, defeats the first temptation of the devil. Jesus rebuttal was excellent indeed, saying that scripture is also necessary for life. Jesus had the scriptures at the forefront of His mind at all times. Lets read about the sword of the Spirit in the book of Ephesians for a moment. 11.) Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12.) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13.) Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14.) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15.) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16.) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17.) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:, Ephesians 6:11-17. The sword of the Spirit is one part of the Christians armor and is needed if spiritual warfare is to be conducted successfully. To see how effective the sword of the Spirit is, lets turn to Hebrews 4:12. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart., Hebrews 4:12.
This very weapon was the choice of Jesus in His defense against Satan. So in the second temptation of Jesus, Satan decides to take scripture out of context and twists it to tempt Jesus. Jesus however having a deep knowledge of Gods word, knew the scripture was being twisted, and quoted a scripture in rebuttal (in context) to counter the lies of Satan. What can we learn from Jesus in this second temptation? We learn that one must have more than just a mere aquaitance with scripture. But one must be able to discern truth from error. Lets look at II Timothy 2:15. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth., II Timothy 2:15. Notice what Paul is telling Timothy, Study to shew thyself approved, why Paul, because if not, a workman will be ashamed because he is unable to rightly divide truth from error. Jesus had more than just a basic knowledge or a mild aquaitance with truth. esus lived truth and had a deep knowledge of it and was able to spot a twisting of scripture immediately. We also learn from this temptation that we are to try the spirits, seeing if what they teach is truth or error. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world., I John 4:1. The Bereans did the same exact thing, they did not take any teacher for granted, despite the fact that Paul and Silas were well-known Christian evangelists, Paul himself being an Apostle, lets see what scriptures says regarding the Bereans. 10.) And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synangogue of the Jews. 11.) These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so., Acts 17:10-11.
