"This patient is a fellow physician and my favorite golf partner. His injury is serious and I fear he will not be able to play golf again unless you follow my orders exacty." The doctor then began listing orders:

"You must give an injection in a different location every twenty minutes followed by a second injection exactly five minutes after the first. He must take two pills at exactly every hour followed by one pill every fifteen minutes for eight hours. He must drink no more and no less than ten ounces of water every twenty-five minutes and must void between.

"Soak his arm in warm water for fifteen minutes then place ice for ten minutes and repeat over and over for the rest of the day. Give range of motion every thirty minutes. He requires a back rub and foot rub every hour. Feed him something tasty every hour. Be cheerful and do whatever he asks at all times.

"Chart his condition and vital signs every twenty minutes. You must do these things exactly as I ordered or his injury will not heal properly, and he will not able to play golf well."

The nurse left the doctor and entered the patient’s room. She was greeted by anxious family and an equally anxious patient. All asked the nurse what the doctor had said about the patient. The nurse started, "The doctor said that you will live." Then quickly reveiwing the orders, the nurse added, "But you will have to learn a new sport."

We did it! This little blog turned one year old yesterday!

Thanks for all your continued reading, sharing posts with your friends and most importantly, your feedback.

This site wouldn’t be what it is without your feedback.

Here’s a “short” video message for you all (or you can read a summary below)…

As I looked at the first year of this site and the upcoming year a few things crossed my mind.

Are my priorities still the same? Are the things that mattered most on Jan. 18, 2010, the same things on Jan. 18, 2011? And the answer is yes.

  1. My faith
  2. My wife (aka My Life) & my family
  3. Building community on and offline
  4. Caring for the under-resourced
  5. Creating

And as you can see, while creating is still in my top 5… its still lower on my list than faith and family… which is a big part of why you’ve seen a big reduction in the number of posts here recently.

Our family size has doubled in the last three months and so has my commitment to my family.

So, I’m trying to be smarter about my time and priorities… which means writing a blog post at 2 a.m. for the sake of publishing a blog post the next morning is no more.

The second thing I looked at was my simplicity statement.

I will live simply by investing in people and reducing my dependence on stuff so that I may truly love all that’s been given to me and create a better world for those around me.

Is it still applicable? Is it still my goal, my mission, what I’m hoping to achieve?

And the answer is, “Yes!” Perhaps even more so as I invest in my boys and my family and work to reduce my dependence on stuff — as well as theirs.

Looking forward

So looking forward to the 2nd year of We Live Simply, I don’t have any huge announcements to give you — no big news or teaser about what you can look forward to.

I am still slowly chipping away on a new e-book — but it’s definitely taken a backseat on my priority list as of late.

As for the site itself, I’m going to continue focusing on the basic ideas and message I’ve been writing about during this first year (although perhaps less frequently). And you may start seeing more videos as I experiment more with that format of “blogging” as well.

If there are posts or ideas you’d like to see covered, please let me know. I’d love to work in any ideas, questions or thoughts that you might have along the way.
