Another user asked me to re-post some things from an earlier thread. I’ve edited it ever so slightly.

We ought always to take immense care when we are studying the Bible, and in particular when we are studying the Godhead. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works(2 Timothy 3:16,17) And since we know that God speaks to us through His Word, we need to be paying attention. In the rest of this post I’ll talk a little bit about how to do that.

I worked with a young man years ago for about ten years. I almost always allowed him to initiate conversations about spiritual things. He came up to me one day and said, "You know, people have been studying the Bible for centuries. Why do you keep on studying it? Haven’t you studied it enough?" I told him that there was so much wisdom and knowledge contained in it that you could probably read it over and over all of your life, and still walk away each time having learned something more. I still know that to be true, and then some of us are slower learners than others. I happen to be a slow learner, but when I learn something, and investigate it using good hermeneutical principles,(more on that later) it stays with me in my heart. Jesus said, "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth the good. And an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth the evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45) We need to bring the good stuff into the computer (our minds and hearts) and keep it there, ready to be used by the Spirit of Truth, at His beck and call.

It has already been established that this thread is about the Godhead, His nature and how to study Him. It isn’t a college paper by any means, but it should be clear where I am going and it comes from my heart and from my own experience, and at the convenience of my rather busy schedule. It will jump about a bit, and for that I apologize, but I hope if there is any aspect of study or information in here that helps you that you will seize upon it for yourself.

I have mentioned that we should use the Bible to study the Bible. Does that exclude all extra-biblical materials? What if there is a word in the Scriptures that we don’t understand? What if we do a word study and look at every appearance of the word in the Scriptures and the different contexts it is used in and we still don’t understand it? A Bible dictionary or glossary comes in handy there. No, I am not throwing you a curve-ball, but compare the definition to another, and err on the side of caution. In this world we tend to want answers yesterday. Answers come in God’s time, and we need to be patient and wait upon Him.

There are those who will tell you right off the bat that the word "Trinity" does not appear in the Bible. That’s very true, but neither does the word, "oneness". The word one appears in the Bible, and so does the word three. So what? There are lots of words that do or do not appear in the Bible. That doesn’t mean that those things do or do not have a basis in reality. The words, car, rocket, and microchip don’t appear in the Bible, but we know that they exist. Saying that something doesn’t appear in the Bible is a poor basis for an argument to disprove its existence. Enough said on that.

Back to studying the nature of God. Let’s go through some verses together.

6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Colossians 2:6-10

We are to "walk" in Him, "rooted" in Him. Jesus is our foundation, and we are supposed to be solidly attached to Him. We are supposed to be "built up" in Him. Plain enough. The Bible tells us this over and over again. This is something every believer should know. It just isn’t reasonable for us to be ignorant of this. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be solidly versed in His Word and dependent on Him. (Proverbs 3:5,6) He wants us to be established in the faith. A wobbling man is easy to knock over. A strongly rooted man is not. We need to be solidly rooted in Jesus, in His Word.

"Beware" says verse eight of Colossians 2. "Beware"— "spoil you"—spoil you how? Verse one was talking about being established in the faith as we have been taught. Verse eight is talking about that faith being ruined in us. Different translations use different words for spoil. Some say "enslave" and some say "take captive" and some say "rob". The end result is the same. The enemy’s goal is to keep people from becoming Christians, and to cripple the walk of those who have already placed their trust in Jesus. His aim the Bible says, is to steal, to kill and to destroy. "spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." The enemy uses men to the utmost to achieve his murderous goals. They are all around us at work, at play and even sometimes in churches. We aren’t to hunker down and shrink in fear over this knowledge. We are to trust in God to preserve our strength. This is why the young man says, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes." Verse eight ought to inform us that embracing the philosophy and traditions of men will destroy our walk.

Verse nine tells us; "For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." When it says "in Him" look back up at verse seven. It is talking about Jesus. We are talking about Jesus here too. In Him–in Christ–dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Let’s break the passage down to look at it more closely. "in Him"—Jesus, "dwelleth"—takes residence or lives, "all the fullness"—this means complete–nothing lacking–simply–all, "of the Godhead"—Father, Son, Holy Spirit, "bodily"—who is being talked about in this passage? Jesus. What does "bodily" mean? It means in His body. Pretty simple really. "FOR IN CHRIST DWELLETH ALL THE FULLNESS OF THE GODHEAD BODILY" Done deal. Oneness is correct, right? No. Not a done deal at all. True, there is one God, and He is Triune in nature. He is eternally existent as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Since the inception of the church this concept has been under fire. The attacks come from all quarters. People tell Trinitarians that they worship three gods, and that they don’t understand the Godhead, but the Doctrine of the Trinity is drawn directly from the Holy Scriptures.

I said before that we can understand the nature of God. I believe that we can. Can we understand everything about that nature? No, I don’t believe we can. Am I equivocating? No. I am pointing out our human limitations. God is infinite. We are finite. He is the Creator. We are His creation. Can the hammer understand the one who crafted the density of the instrument? No, and believe me, I am more dense than a hammer. (Laughing here) But the Bible teaches about this subject throughout it’s pages. I cannot say that I completely understand the concept of the Trinity, but I can say that I know that God exists this way, because the Bible teaches it. If one looks at the verses I shared in my initial post in this thread, one will see a progression, and some evidence of what I say. My goal in this thread is to show God’s counsel on the subject as wholly as I can. My one presupposition here is to believe what the Bible teaches, and I will endeavor to prove what it does teach about the Godhead. I don’t have to fully understand a subject to know that it teaches a subject. Let’s remember who we are dealing with here. We can understand the nature of God. We can appreciate His nature and character to the depths of our souls. Can we fully understand His nature? No.

Just about every group that has departed from Christian faith and become a cult of it either began when someone attempted to improperly explain the Trinity. They all try to diminish God in some way. Mormonism, with Joseph Smith’s "first vision" was a departure from what the Bible teaches about the Trinity. The Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the divinity of Jesus. Oneness Pentecostals believe in modalism–on and on. Perverting the Doctrine of the Trinity, the Godhead is what cults are all about. It began with Gnostics and Judaizers who followed Paul and others around, trying to deny the true gospel in one way or another and continues through the cults of today, and because they do not have the real and only God who exists, no matter how diligently they believe, something is lacking for them, and they all have to depend on some form of works for salvation. It makes sense doesn’t it? If one is not depending on the true God of the Bible, one needs to find another way to have an assurance of salvation. They turn to the works they are still enslaved to.

Because this concept is so important I will dispense with technical theological references whenever possible and instead focus on the simple truths that the Bible puts forth. I will post verses, and we can go through them together. Lord willing, I won’t leave you hanging. I will hammer some things home time and again. I will begin with another overview. 1) I am a monotheist. I believe in only One True God. 2} There is a plurality of persons within my God, and that is no figment of my imagination any more than He is, nor is this a temporary situation. 3) The Father is God 4) The Son is God 5) The Holy Spirit is God.

The hard part to grasp is that One plus One plus One equals One, but in the context of the Godhood, that’s precisely what the Bible tells us. That "threeness" is expressed in Scripture, and that is what I will keep exploring. I hope you will join with me.

I mentioned good hermeneutical principles earlier. I will leave you with a good practical set that I use myself.

Some Brief Hermeneutical Principles
1. Determine the historical background, the geographical location, and the chronological period of the Scripture even, saying, or teaching you are studying.

2. Consider the relevant socio-economic and cultural factors of the time of the event, saying, or teaching occurred or was intended to be heard or observed.

3. Interpret the Bible naturally, normal or literally unless the language or context suggests otherwise. Literal interpretation here means the opposite of figurative, allegorical, or mythical interpretation.

4. Consider the contextual setting of the Scripture passage being interpreted. This should include the immediate context, the book context, the testament context, and finally the whole biblical context. Scripture should be compared with and interpreted by other Scripture.

5. Consider the grammar, syntax and definition of the words in the text. Knowledge and use of the original languages is most helpful here, but not absolutely necessary.

6. Build doctrine rationally, biblically and systematically. Theology should grow out of the biblical text,be supported by it,and be systematized with the whole of it.

When the Rubber Meets the Road

We’re all refined in the fires of life and we all need more faith. What sort of metal we’re made of is proven in the outcome of the trials we face. When our decisions are left until the moment the trial begins we compound their effect.

A mindset driven by desire and fueled by persistence can make categorical decisions about certainties in life.

-   We won’t achieve our goals without persistence.
-   We won’t endure long on our own.
-   Our thoughts determine our actions.
-   Our actions reveal our faith.

Setting the First Goal

When our first decision is to run toward, rather than away from, life’s challenges, we allow the creative imagination to rise up courageously. We recognize that all of our goals are set in anticipation of the obstacles in our way.

If something we desire is waiting right in front of us we don’t set a goal to obtain it, we simply take it.

The objects we desire usually require well thought out plans before we can hope to obtain them. Even the trip to the grocery store requires forethought and faith. Sometimes our plan needs to include another step in case the first store is out of what we wanted.

When life is lived in reaction to everything that besets us we develop habits that are defensive in nature. Creative imagination isn’t designed as a protection mechanism but will become so if that’s the extent of its use.

The Community

The company we keep, like the thoughts we think, has a profound affect upon the goals we make. We won’t dream big in a cautious crowd. In timid company, the rogue individual who’s willing to strike out on their own is excluded.

If we want to set goals worthy of our greatest dreams we’ll need people close by who believe in us. The more encouragement we receive, the more faith we have to achieve.

Envy and jealousy are obviously absent in groups that thrive on encouraging one another. We celebrate everything because it keeps us all moving forward. The overall health of any network of like minded people depends upon the weakest member.

Fueling Our Minds

Autosuggestion takes place constantly. Unless we remain vigilant over the information and emotions that affect our subconscious minds, we’ll lose ground to the negative influences around us. Everything we hear and see should be filtered through our conscious thought process.

This is why our goals are written down and recited daily. This isn’t simply a memory technique but an exercise for our subconscious mind. Our active part in autosuggestion is a conscious objective to the success of the overall plan.

An entrepreneur acquires more faith when the thought process sets the emotional tone for every active step they take toward their goal.

An athlete develops greater confidence when their thoughts condition the rush of adrenaline to release at specific intervals throughout the game.

The Outcome

Regardless of what transpires during the game, or in life, the discipline of persistence drives us onward.

It doesn’t take more faith to keep going. Belief becomes stronger because we keep going.

To twist a popular phrase, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough are still going.’

The tenacity of someone who is passionate about what they do is clearly evident. They read like a book.

When the object of faith is clearly defined, the plan of action has purpose. Understanding the mission attracts more support than powerful speeches or pleas. We all want a reason for what we get behind. The more powerful that vision, that dream, that goal, the harder we’ll persevere in our quest.

One more thing outta the way

Last night I was able to finish the new flooring in the house. It’s more one thing off the list of things to do before we leave. Whenever you leave for a big trip, you’d be amazed at all of the little things that you have to do ans think about in. In this case with the whole family leaving it makes it much more difficult. For example, who will watch Fredy and Reco for 5 weeks? So to have someone watch them, it’s over 2500.00. What do you do about mail? What bills do you have to pay ahead of time to make sure nothing bounces while you are away? What other decisions will need to be made and how will you be contacted?

In today’s world everyone wants things quick and fast, more of less instant. When people traveled 100 years ago, how did they handle things? Good question.

As we get closer, we will have more updates as we prepare and pack for the next family adventure. Oliver is older now, and so we are curious to see how well he behaves. I am sure he will be fine, however this will be a completely new experiance for him. I want to see how he does and interacts at his age. I know he is looking forward to find people to play with in other countries. All good things.

On another note, I think I am going to try for another Alaskian Adventure in 2012. Right now I am in the planning stages, and I think I have talked someone else into going, which is what you always need on this type of adventure. So the summer of 2011, will hopefully be used to practice and the winter as well. The problem with the last adventure was too many things happened at the last minuite. So this time, more planning is needed. I learned alot of valuable information that I can surely use to prepare of the next adventure.

More Than A Conqueror

I so thank God for His Word, His people, His Mercy and His Grace… I suffered from depression for over a year. This depression (in my case) was brought on by sin. I felt like God did not want to hear from me.. because I kept going to Him, saying sorry but then doing the same thing over and over.. I felt helpless, hopeless, ashamed, defeated and disconnected.. Due to pride I didn’t confide in anyone..

I often cried before the Lord and had thoughts of suicide… If it wasn’t for God’s Holy Spirit encouraging me to keep going and not give up… I would have lost my mind or would be 6ft deep.. hell being my eternal home if I did not repent.. The Holy Spirit pushed me to keep attending church even when I didn’t want to go, He convicted me while hearing the Word of God, He comforted me when I was in despair…

The people of God although may have not known my struggles, kept me in prayer… I often asked God to expose me and maybe I would stop the secret sin.. He did not… He knows His daughter and exposure was not in His plan for my healing.. What was in His plan of healing was the WORD… it convicted me to action.. sermons, Bible Study Lessons and scriptures brought me through..

Joining this site has helped tremendously.. The prayers of others, the Words of encouragement, comfort, conviction opened my eyes… To God be the Glory… I stopped feeling sorry for myself and I stopped being so tough on myself.. I recognized that the enemy was trying to wipe me out.. that is his job… but greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world..

When I was not strong enough to wage spiritual warfare I know the saints and angels of God were fighting on my behalf..

When I remembered Gods Word that I am more than a conqueror and that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, I was encouraged.. and now I encourage you to remember who you are in Christ when trials and tribulations come your way.. Remember that many are the afflictions of the righteous but God delivers us out of not just some, not only 1/2 but ALL…

If you are struggling with depression.. and yes Christians do have such struggles… I want you to know that God is Jehovah Rophe the Lord that heals… and He can heal your mind… he can deliver you from the hands of the enemy and the grips of depression…. KEEP PRAYING… STAY IN GOD’S WORD… AND STAY IN FELLOWSHIP WITH LIKE-MINDED BELIEVERS…
