I’m always inspired by folks living out this journey we call “Living Simply” and even more so by those who take the time to share their journey with us via their blogs or other online activities.

There are definitely some big name folks out there, but I want to draw some special attention to 7 Simple Bloggers who might have flown under your radar previously, but who I think we should all be reading in 2011.

In no particular order…

Christine Sine – Christine is in no way you’re typical “Living Simply” blogger (or is she new to the blogging world). She and her husband Tom, live in a small community of friends in Seattle, who share community meals, an organic garden, prayers and more. Her blog tells some of the stories related to living in this community — but what really makes it stand out is her posts about contemplative living.

The Outdoor Wife – I just recently found Nish thanks to one of your great suggestions. Nish is a wife, mom, an adventurer, city-dweller and music snob. Her blog is a collection of her passions, including her family, the outdoors and her faith. Always a great read.

The Everyday Minimalist – I did a site search here for Everyday Minimalist and realized that almost all of my Link Love posts included at least one post from her. So, perhaps she hasn’t flown under your radar? She lives the life of a location-independent freelancer who’s always sharing practical tips on running her business, finances and living simply.

Love and Trash – A group “DIY blog for people who do things differently.” And do things differently is what they do. I love the site and the varied voices that they bring in about folks who are actually DOING something about changing the world around them.

What Would Jesus Eat? – Until just recently, Lucas and his family were living in Waco, Texas, where he was serving as the Urban Gardening Intern at World Hunger Relief, Inc. They recently packed up their lives and moved to Bolivia and is now writing about their adventures there as well as his continued exploration into how food connects to every aspect of our lives.

Itty Bitty Impact – I don’t remember when/how I first found Tonia’s blog, but I’ve enjoyed it ever since. She and her new hubby have recently moved from the ‘burbs to a hobby farm in Minnesota. Her new home is providing lots of great inspiration for the blog and I look forward to following their continued adventures through 2011.

Andrew Randazzo – Andrew’s been a fun blogger to watch throughout 2010 as he’s re-defined what minimalism means to him. And after his recent month-long excursion to Kenya, I’m excited to see how it changes/affects his journey and blogging. It’s hard to spend any time in Africa without it leaving a permanent mark on you.

A few weeks back I had the privilege of chatting with Correy Allan (simplemarriage.net) for my podcast.

It great was to hear his heart and his story… and even more since he was on a short sabbatical working on his latest book, Buck Naked Marriage, which will be released next week.

My biggest take home was how vital our views of marriages are when it comes to our attitudes towards others.

Corey gets it absolutely right when he says that the point of marriage is for us to make the other person better — not for our own pleasure and happiness.

Getting into marriage with a “you complete me” mindset can be detrimental — and can bleed into our other relationships as well.

Instead, we should look at marriage as how best can we complete our spouse and make them a better person — and then learn from that and carry it into everyone relationship within our sphere of influence.

5 Simple Ideas for Fun Family Photos

When it comes to the dynamics of a family, nothing is ever “posed” and stiff! A day in the life usually involves chaos and craziness at every turn. Have you ever seen those family pictures where everyone matches, the background is a muddy shade of tie-dye blue, and the kids have gone bug-eyed from posing too long? I couldn’t imagine looking at a picture of my family like this and thinking, “Wow, this picture really encapsulates who we are together.” Um, I don’t think so!

Families involve happy times, angry times, silly times, crazy times, and everything in between. The only way to get the real-ness of a family is to find a photographer that can catch those in between reactions and go on a fun (no, really!) family photo shoot with you.

1) Go OUTSIDE the box (Or studio, that is)

Sometimes being in a studio just creates that stuffy stifled atmosphere that suppresses the real interactions of a family. I believe that each family member gets nervous because it is an out-of-the-ordinary setting and one no one is used to. So, get out of there! Take the kids and go to a park. Visit the zoo or go get some ice cream. For fun family photos, take a trip somewhere to do something your family is used to doing together. Your family photos will look more real, your photographer will have an easier time of catching those moments that make your family unique, and everyone will be relaxed and at ease with each other. No nervousness allowed!

2) Matching Smatching

I don’t know any families that wear matching clothing all of the time. If you want family photos that look real, look believable, and look like YOU, wouldn’t it make sense to do the things you’re used to doing every day? If you don’t wear matching shirts every time you leave the house, don’t wear them to the photo shoot! Wear things you are comfortable in and that make each of you feel good. Bright colors usually work the best for the camera and help each person to stand out from the background. My suggestion is to pick a color scheme and stick with it. Choose just a few colors for your family photos that everyone is comfortable with and looks attractive in. Blend – don’t match.

3) Ignore the Camera….no, seriously

I have seen so many occasions where people get in front of the camera and automatically freeze. There is just something about that big glass lens that makes people stiffen up and become nervous! The BEST way to become comfortable in front of the camera is to act like it isn’t even there. IGNORE IT. Tell the kids to ignore the camera like they ignore you when you tell them to clean their room. Yep, that should get the message across. The more you act like yourselves, the better your family pictures will turn out.

4) Photographer knows best

Moms, you may have to take a breather on this one. For your family photos, ask your family photographer for suggestions and tips on how to make your day more successful. For example, I would tell a client to make sure you scheduled your family photo session around your normal daily schedule. Be aware of naptimes, wake-up times, work-times, and any other time that you are used to during your daily routine. Also, be very aware of the time of day that you choose for your shoot. If you want to take a trip to the park for your family photos, don’t plan on having the shoot at 1pm in the afternoon. The light will not work nearly as well as it would closer to evening or late afternoon. Squinty eyes can ruin a picture! Always ask your photographer for some helpful tips and ideas to you can plan your shoot accordingly. Remember: The photographer wants to work with you!

5) ALL Day is okay!

Here is a fun family photo idea that I often like to throw out there: why not book a family photographer for the entire DAY? Have the photographer get the real low-down on what your family is like on an hour-by-hour basis. Booking your family photographer for an entire day of shooting will get many moments of daily life you wouldn’t capture otherwise. For the moms, you are usually the one taking the pictures, right? Or you dads? This way, you BOTH can be in the photos without having to set a timer and run to pose in front of the camera. These shoots produce photojournalistic style photos – ones that tell a story, moment to moment, emotion to emotion. Get the kids in their jammies eating breakfast, the family making dinner together, and the parents tucking the kids in bed. You could break apart the day any which way you like, just so long as you get the memories that you want to hold on to.

The biggest part of fun family photography is getting everyone to act in the normal way they do when together, without a strange camera in your face. When a family is real and comfortable with each other, the true spirit of the family dynamic comes across. Using these tips for better family photos, getting that spirit across to the photographer is what will give you lasting and memorable family photos for years to come.

simple prayer

I hav seneral things that need to be prayed about but i dont want to take alot of time to explain each one…. so i will be simple about them.
1. I need a finacial blessing. I hav senveral things that need to be takin care of an i dont kno how i can do that. I hava suv that needs anew tire, a repair bill to pay, an a new tag to get.I also hav s few other things as well but these are the most important rite now.
2. Ther is an assult charge that i hav had toi make against the husband of a friend of mine an it is in the hands of the prosecuters rite now. I sont kno when or if it will go to court but its heavy on my mind alot an I just want it to be over with so i can move on with the friendship or let the friendship go.
These 2 are the most important ones on my mind at the moment an all i ask is that u say a simple prayer to cover them for me. I thank u in advance for doin this an ask GOd to bless u as well.

10 Simple exercises to start now (if you haven’t already)

Simplifying your fitness routine means choosing exercises that will get the most bang for their buck. Usually these exercise will fall into the four basic movement patterns – Jump, Push, Pick up from ground, and run.

If you are trying to evaluate the merits of a exercise program or develop one your self than using most of the movements included below is a good place to start.

The exercises are a mix between body weight movements, weightlifting, and ways to move distance – i.e running, rowing, and swimming. I prefer having a mashup like this because it ensures that I have a good balance between strength and conditioning. Favoring any one to much will create other deficits in your overall fitness and make you susceptible to over use injuries (yes i’m talk to you if all you do it run).

Some of the movements below have a video with it. These videos were filmed at the gym I work at to assist people with proper technique. If you’re curious to know which one I am, I am the demo guy in the first squat video.

Squat. The squat is the king of all movements. No other exercise has the ability to be the only exercise you ever do and still manage to be in pretty good shape.

Push ups. The best movement to build upper body pushing strength while only using your own body weight.
Pull Ups. The best movement to build upper body pulling strength while not having to use any other weights or machines.
Running short distances and sprinting. Running isn’t just about stepping outside your door and running around the block a few times at a leisurely pace. Our ancestors sprinted fast and hard for hunting and escaping predators. Luckily we don’t have to do much of that these days but alternating between slow long distance runs and short 50 yard sprints is a great way to maintain and develop cardiovascular strength.
Dead lift. The dead lift sounds as daunting as your name. It the heaviest exercise your body can do.

Press. A lot of old school weightlifters believe that the measure of a mans strength is whether or not they can press their body weight with a barbell. You don’t necessarily need to be able to press your body weight but it couldn’t hurt.

Over Head Squat. The over head squat is not only impressive to watch but is great at developing should stability to prevent injuries and also develop core strength.

GHD Situp. The GHD sit up is one of the most difficult abdominal movements if you are doing full range of motion.

Rowing. Most gyms have a rower but no one ever uses it. It sits in the corner and collects dust. This is unfortunate because rowing is more of a total body cardiovascular workout than most other ‘cardio’ equipment.
Swimming. This is the most low impact exercise on the list and probably the funnest. After a hard work out one of my favorite things to do is jump in the pool and swim a few easy laps to get some circulation so I can recover faster.
