Faith and Religion Are Not Contradictory as Some Think

This promises to be one of the most controversial articles I wrote; not because of the contents, but just because religious issues always are.

Few months ago, it was two hundred years ago that Darwin was born. Fifty years later he presented his theory on the origin of species through evolution. I cannot claim to be an expert on his theory, but I understand its general premise and the evidence supporting its main concepts. The concept of evolution has gone beyond biology to inspire a set of algorithms that can be used to find solutions to difficult engineering problems. These are called evolutionary algorithms. They start from a random set of solutions and arrive to a near-optimal solution through successive generations created by merging the fittest members of the previous generation. Evolutionary algorithms have been used by many scientists for solving difficult optimization problems and they do work. Hence, at least in this context, there is merit to evolution as a way for adapting a solution to fit a specific environment.

Some people question Darwin’s theory on the origin of species and find it threatening to their religious beliefs. Does evolution as a theory affect my religious faith? Not really, First of all, Darwin’s theorem does not contradict the existence of God. It does not start from the beginning, but rather in the middle of the story ignoring the most important part: the root of it all. His theory merely explains a possible intelligent design for progression of creation. Secondly, faith for me and many others is based on a set of spiritual values not scientific facts. One cannot argue and disprove the former while the latter is fair game. To me, religion and science do not exist in the same domain and hence cannot cross paths. If you are a star-trek fan, you understand the concept of parallel domains. Scientists also use the concept of domains on daily basis as they analyze complex systems. They understand that you cannot liberally mix signals from different domain or the results would be disastrous. Simply speaking, science and religion cannot be used to contradict each other by the virtue of their own definition.

With this in mind one can always find a way to reconcile religious beliefs and scientific facts rather than declare the science as invalid based on our limited knowledge and intelligence. It was not long ago, relatively speaking, that earth was thought to be the center of the universe and that scientists declaring it not to be were thought misguided. This notion is now thought of as laughable and no one see it as a challenge to our religious beliefs, a far cry from how threatening this was at one point in our human history. Declaring religion to be an illusion based on a theory is just as dangerous and misguided. God help those who lost their faith for faith is the greatest gift of God to humans. It is a power that sustains at times of hardship and a light that leads when only dark thoughts are abound. Without it, we are lonely amongst the closest of friends and kin and powerless at the peak of our strength.

According to Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich”, faith, “is a state of mind which may be induced, or created by affirmation or repeated instruction to the subconscious mind, through the power of autosuggestion”.

Faith that we will be discussing here is not necessarily a spiritually based faith, but the principle will be the same.

The need for “something” whether we call it faith or not, becomes readily apparent as we begin to apply Mr. Hill’s methods. How can we even begin to believe we can receive, when we can’t even conceive of the possibility?

In other words, “I would like to believe if I could”.

We first must convince our subconscious mind that we will (and do) receive what we ask for.

Belief doesn’t have to be limited to our perception of reality, and can’t be, or nothing will change. In “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill states, “there are no limitations to the mind accept those we acknowledge”.

Once we accept the fact that our beliefs can be unlimited, we are on our way.

One thing we must realize and remember is that we not only will receive what we believe, but we will only receive what we believe.

We rarely go beyond our beliefs. We all may dream about success, riches of some kind, etc., but dreams are not beliefs. Interview any successful person and key to their success is the undying belief in themselves.

Critical to the whole process is our belief in ourselves. As we review our lives honestly, we will no doubt remember times of fear, doubt, unbelief, etc. While these emotions are real and human, they must not dominate our thinking.

Remember Napoleon Hill also says, “Thoughts are things and powerful things at that”.

As surely as positive thoughts and beliefs can transmute into reality, negative thoughts can also become reality or continue as reality.

The application of faith, to empower our desire, is in replacing “old” negative thoughts with thoughts of self assurance, self confidence and belief.

We begin to see very clearly that the principles that are taught in “Think and Grow Rich” have nothing to do with trying to “conjure” something from nothing. What is being taught is the fact that all change begins with the thinker and their thoughts.

Before we can “have” we must first “do”, after we have “become”. The application of his revelations concerning faith is in the understanding and use of the power necessary to bring our belief to reality.

We must first “become”. We become as we think.

Form the thought that you desire. Commit your desire to your mind in the form of a definite belief. Speak that belief aloud repeatedly in order to convince your subconscious mind. Trust in the power that is being generated (faith).  Accept your belief as reality whether you see it or not.

Does it work? Napoleon Hill accepted the assignment of Andrew Carnegie to pass on to the world his “secret” for fabulous success. After twenty five years of research and interviews with five hundred successful men, Mr. Hill published his findings.

Today, we have the advantage in “Think and Grow Rich”, of discovering anew and personally applying their “secret”.

“Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man,

But soon or late the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can”.

We Must Think Clearly About our Lord’s Promise of Giving Us the Things Desired When We Pray in Faith

“…What things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” — Mark 11:24.

Jesus Christ makes it very simple, whatever things that are necessary to satisfy our spiritual and earthly needs will be given according to the measure of our faith. Please notice He is not talking about our wants, He is referring to our needs! With these inspirational words of Jesus, He is showing us that He has obligated Himself to satisfy the continual and persistent needs or desires of His praying people. His words plainly leave no doubt in our minds concerning His eagerness to answer our requests.

Look again at the words that are written above; we must obey this basic law of faith. We must by genuinely believing that we receive the things desired when we pray. Otherwise, very simply, they will not be given to us. It is essential that we do some clear thinking in regards to our Lord’s promise of giving us the things desired when we pray in faith.

There are some very unwise people who have interpreted Jesus as saying, “When ye pray, believe that you have the things desired, and you have them.” Once more please look at what Jesus says above. It is hard to believe this idea that the Master is teaching about the prayer of faith. But look at it this way. No intelligent person can believe that they have received the things desired unless they actually have received them. Would it not be ridiculous to make such a claim in the light of this truth?

It is very deceptive and misleading to tell a person who is sincerely seeking and desiring a pure heart to believe that the blessing has been received when that person knows in their heart that it is not at all true. This absurd teaching leaves a person completely confused and very disappointed. A person must receive this from the Holy Spirit to validate the work of grace performed in the heart. An honest person cannot verify that they have been granted the things desired unless they know that they have received them from God.

We must never take for granted that we have the things we desire. Our faith does not rest on an assumption; our faith rests on the guarantee communicated to us by God’s Spirit of Truth. When Jesus showed us His terms to satisfy our desires, He communicated the reason for us to pray. He is saying, “Whatsoever things you desire, when you pray, believe that God has provided them, and you will have them.”

We must first have faith that the resources of God are made available to us through prayer. If we entertain the slightest doubt in our hearts regarding this fact, we cannot obtain the things desired to satisfy us in life.

While we are sincerely thinking on these incredible words of Jesus regarding the things we desire in prayer, let us not fail to notice the fact that He is talking about the mountain being removed at the word of command. If it is God’s purpose to eliminate all the sin and the misery from this earth at His word of command, then would it not be true as well, that everything that is necessary to accomplish His purpose for His people is made accessible to them for the condition of redeeming grace? Of course! We have everything we desire to do His will, not ours, but His will be done.

When we truly look at this truth we can easily understand God’s purpose in creating the throne of grace. Are we not told to come boldly to the throne of grace in our time of need? We can enthusiastically understand the real incentive to praying when we know that our rightful desires will be granted when we pray for the things that are appropriate to the plan of redemption as we have discovered in Christ. There is no provision made to humor our worldly desires, unless of course these things that we desire are honestly connected to Christ’s plan of salvation. Quite simple really; His will be done. His will is that no one will parish, but that everyone will have everlasting life with Him.

As an emotion, faith is among the strongest and is a state of mind that most effects the subconscious mind. This is important when it comes to putting your thoughts into action in everyday life. If you set yourself a task but are lacking the faith in yourself to complete it then subconsciously you are accepting defeat as inevitable. However, if you are able to convince yourself subconsciously that you can achieve what you set out to do then your efforts will be boosted and the results will reaffirm your self belief and strengthen your faith.

It is difficult for people to strengthen faith if they are lacking it. However, it is achievable and is done by a process which involves encouraging positive thoughts and emotions in the subconscious mind rather than negative ones. This can be more clearly understood if you take a moment to think about how people fall into negative habits such as alcoholism. When a drinker remembers their first ever drink they will more than likely say they did not enjoy it. After becoming accustomed to drinking regularly and enduring the bad side effects they eventually start to embrace alcohol and eventually begin to rely on it. This example suggests that if thought impulses of any kind are repeated and encouraged then that person will seek to express those thoughts through their actions. If the thoughts are positive and result in constructive actions then faith may be strengthened.

If thoughts are backed by strong emotions such as faith and love then they have more chance of being expressed through actions. Therefore your actions can be affected by any strong emotion whether it is positive and productive or negative and destructive. If you are to become successful in whatever goals you have set yourself in life then you need to avoid negative emotions and encourage positive ones. As a consequence you will acquire a subconscious mind that will start to act upon all the positive emotions including faith.

One of the most common causes of a lack of faith is low self confidence. This can be over come through a similar process to the one just mentioned. If you take the time to write down all your positive experiences and attributes and then read these to yourself daily, you will find that the repeated positive affirmations will reassure you of your accomplishments subconsciously and restore faith. The following few principles outline methods to help with faith and self confidence.

Firstly you need to realise that you have the ability to meet your main objectives in life. This means you need to be persistent at all times in chasing your aims even when there are signs of initial failure.

Secondly you must spend some time in the day just thinking positively about yourself and where you want to go in life. A mind dominated by positive thoughts will eventually express desirable physical actions.

Thirdly you should have your ultimate dream goal written down and you must promise yourself that you will never give up trying to achieve that goal even if you are not, at that time, confident enough, you will be eventually.

Fourthly you should take advantage of others to achieve your goals. You will be able to succeed by putting the hard work in yourself which will make the rewards all the more sweeter. A negative attitude to people will not bring success. However, by making others believe in your ability you will reaffirm your self belief.

Repeat these principles and you will find that you are able to increasingly influence your subconscious mind. This process of positive thinking has been called auto-suggestion and is a key to the success of many. In short if you think that you will fail then it is likely that you will, but if you convince yourself that you will succeed then you have more chance of doing so. The people that win in today’s world are the ones that know they can.
