God Even Sees What You Sweep Under the Rug

Recently at work, I pulled a bunch of the shelfs in the store away from the wall and starting cleaning the dirt and dust that had accumulated over the past several years behind there. After cleaning for a little while, a co-worker asked me- why are you doing that? Nobody can see behind there. Why is it worth so much effort to clean that? I gave a simple answer: God can see it.

This is the same attitude that a lot of Christians have about sin. They will say: it’s okay if I look at **** as long as I stash it well enough that I am never caught. Many will cheat on their taxes and even blame their disobedience to the law on God. They will say "I only answer to God, not the president." They forget that difficult verse in Romans that says to subject themselves to governing authorities so long as they don’t require you to do evil. I hear many Christians being gossip hounds and proudly stating that the person they are talking about will never know it was them that spread such a rumor. The fact is that all of this is dirt in your life and God can see the dirt on our soul, even if we sweep it under the rug.

The fact is that we should be living lives as if there are cameras following us around everywhere and microphones implanted into the deepest reaches of our brain that brodcast all of our thoughts and all of our actions over the most popular TV channel ever. The fact is, such a channel would be God’s favorite channel. This is the way He percieves us. If we have a dirty thought it is as if we have said it out loud. If we do something bad behind closed doors it is as if it was right in front of Him. If a thought or action is too bad to do in front of people, shouldn’t it be too dirty to do in front of God?

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Faith Under Fire: How Can We Know That An Untried Faith Is Sure?

As I delivered the daily papers to the inmate library, one of the guards leaned near and whispered, “How, if your faith has never been tried, can you know that it is sure?”

Seeking advice from an inmate came difficult to him, and we were not alone. “The heart,” I answer as quietly as possible, “God knows your heart.” I told him to look up 1-John 3:20,21.

Later, while pondering that question, I realized that the very nature of the inquiry stood as evidence of a faith under fire. We always tend to think too big. Few trials actually involve critical issues such as illness, death, or other great ordeal. Most often, our faith is tested by daily routine. We encounter difficult co-workers, angry spouses, careless drivers, the hungry, the poor, and those with whom we should share God’s word.

True faith reflects the Spirit within us by revealing a love for God and others. It is manifest as a sincere desire to please the Father through obedience to the Son. Although all fall short, if we practice Christian responses (Gal. 5:22,23), from a pure heart (2-Cor. 7:9-12), we can be confident that our faith is sure.

The trying of our faith brings about patience. We learn to count these things a joy and a privilege.

Prayer:

Father, strength us in the inner man so that we respond to our daily trials from a heart of love. Cast out all upsurges of anger, bitterness, and pride that we may be filled with your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer focus: gaining a Spirit filled attitude.

Cultivating Faith Under Stress

I struggle with faith, I always have. If I can’t see it, hear it or feel it, it’s hard for me to believe it’s there. And I am so envious of those who just have it. It is rock solid for them and they never seem to waiver in their conviction or belief that God or a higher power or whatever they call it, is there for them. I want that kind of belief in faith, I truly do.

Although I am in the process of collecting stories from other women who have gone through adversity, make no mistake; I’ve got my own story to tell. And at some point I will. In the meantime I am trying to muddle through what is beginning to feel like an endless string of bad patches. And faith is first and foremost in my mind right now.

It seems to dance around me, taunting and teasing me. It alights upon my shoulder when I’m having a good day. But when the chips are down, and the stress is heightened, faith eludes me, like the golden fireflies of summer. I pray for faith, I meditate on it and I affirm that I have it. And yet…I know it has not sunk deep into my soul yet. I just finished readingAnatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss. What a great book! She is medical intuitive and amazingly insightful.

One of my favorite lines in her book is:

“Choice is the process of creation itself.”

Lately I am imagining “faith” and “fear” sitting like two entities, one upon each of my shoulders (kind of like the devil and angel in an old cartoon). The choice really is mine in who gets to stay and who needs to go. I just need to keep reminding myself of this day by day. Hopefully the day will arrive, preferably sooner than later, when faith has knocked fear on it’s butt and left by the side of the road to fend for itself.

I’ve got faith that it will.
